Nonaction Verbs

Non-action or stative verbs are used to show qualities not capable of change. For example, "He is tall" or "It belongs to me."

Stative verbs include the following:

abhor, adore, astonish, believe, desire, detest, dislike, doubt, feel, forgive, guess, hate, hear, imagine, impress, intend, know, like, love, mean, mind, perceive, please, prefer, presuppose, realize, recall, recognize, regard, remember, satisfy, see, smell, suppose, taste, think, understand, want, wish

The verbs like, prefer, want, and need can be followed by a noun or an infinitive (to the base form of a verb). The -ing form can also follow the verbs like and prefer.

I like to swim. OR I like swimming.
He prefers to read. OR He prefers reading.

An infinitive can also follow these common verbs: agree, decide, forget, hope, plan, refuse, and seem.
