Near and next to are not the same.
Look at the letters of the alphabet:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
The letter A is next to the letter B. It is near the letter B, too.
The letter A is near the letter C, but it is not next to the letter C.
The letter J is not next to the letter A. It is not near the letter A, either.
